The Boston Private Industry Council (PIC) is a nonprofit organization that helps Boston-based youth and adults find education and employment opportunities. As the city’s school-to-career intermediary, PIC re-engages high school students who fall behind or drop out of school while also serving as postsecondary coaches for BPS graduates throughout their local college education.

Follow-Up Surveys
Starting in the mid-1980s, CLMS collaborated with the Boston Private Industry Council and Boston Public Schools to conduct a follow-up survey of high school graduates from the preceding calendar year. The survey was designed to collect information on the graduates’ current employment and college enrollment status, including information on the types of college and post-secondary training institutions attended, financial aid, employment, wages, and job-related training activities.

Teen Summer Employment
Summer employment is important for youth laborers to gain experience, and potentially secure future labor market opportunities. However, summer employment opportunities have been declining, especially for demographics who would benefit most from them. Research shows that those who work most intensively in high school obtain more jobs and earn higher wages after graduation, though teen employment rates have fallen by 50% between 2000 and 2012. To help combat the phenomenon at a grassroots level, in addition to enacting policies, organizations such as PIC help teens seek employment, and provide support so teens remain successful at their jobs. The following reports discuss such policies and infrastructures for youth in various school systems and demographics.
